A magnificent ancient Chong dZi displaying four stripes. Blood spots can be seen under magnification. This particular type of Chong (Tibetan Wylie: mChong) is most associated with the Himalayan regions and Tibet.
Tibetans value this type more greatly than the decorated agates and carnelians that were traded to Tibet from India in ancient times. The colour of the agate material, bead size and style of the decoration is clearly of a different quality to the Indian decorated agates and this may well suggest that there was a bead making industry that was unique to the Himalayan regions and distinct from other known bead making industries like we find in Burma. These beads have now become incredibly scarce and seldom come into the marketplace for sale.
Condition: Very good with minor weathering commensurate with age.
No breaks or repairs. A robust bead!
