A fine looking bow shaped stone bead of rare appearance and size. The bead has been crafted from stone (possibly chlorite schist) and displays a central band of quartz. This bead is in perfect condition. It was originally purchased strung on a strand with ancient Pyu beads. This is the only example of a bow shaped bead made from this material that we have seen. It is therefore difficult to say whether it is genuinely ancient. Large bow shaped beads have certainly been found in Burma and the Himalayan regions and some may be well over 2000 years old.
Whether this bead was originally from Burma or was traded from elsewhere is unknown. Round beads (believed to be of ancient origin) made from the same material have certainly been found in India and the Indus Valley region, so perhaps this was where it was originally crafted. It is a very handsome one of a kind bead and would make a great focal bead on a necklace.
Size: 55.4mm x 22.4mm
Origin: Burma but possibly traded from elsewhere
