A rare dark green nephrite jade Milarepa statue. It is carved entirely by hand and is one of only a handful that were commissioned. Stone statues of Tibetan deities and lamas are particularly hard to acquire.
The jade material was sourced in Canada and then shipped to Thailand where it was carved by a lapidarist. The actual nephrite jade used in this piece comes from the same source as the jade used to craft the famous 2.7 metre high Jade Buddha for World Peace.
Milarepa was famous for his spontaneous songs of realisation. During his 12 years of strict retreat he subsisted on nettle tea and eventually this turned his skin green, hence the reason he is often depicted as being green in colour. Crafting his image from green jade is therefore particularly appropriate.
Height approx 4.25 inches
Material: Nephrite Jade (any streaks or inclusions are naturally inherent in the jade)
